Welcome to the Evansville Audubon Society, a chapter of the
National Audubon Society. The National Audubon Society, the largest and
most effective grassroots environmental organization in the country,
believes that individuals make a difference. Especially if they are
Audubon members.
Here are some of the benefits and activities
Evansville Audubon members enjoy:
NEWSLETTER: Our
newsletter, "The Bluebird," details programs, field trips, and meetings of
our chapter, along with added features on birds and other wildlife,
conservation issues, and education matters. (The online version will include photos and graphics, when
available)
PROGRAMS: We meet the
third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (except July and August) in the
Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve building, 551 North Boeke Road, in
Evansville, Indiana. Programs cover a wide range of nature-related
subjects.
FIELD TRIPS:
Field trips are designed for pure fun as well as for
education. Naturally, we schedule jaunts for bird-watching--both around
town and all over the Tri-State area. (One favorite outing was a trip to
Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee to spot eagles!) In addition, we hike in unique
natural areas, conduct tree and wildflower identification, and take canoe
trips.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
We undertake special projects to aid the local
conservation effort and to help educate the general public to our cause.
We support the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve and cooperate with other
conservation groups such as the Hoosier Environmental Council. We were a
charter member of Friends of Ayrshire, a group that worked for the
establishment of the Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife Area, just off the I-164
Boonville-New Harmony Road exit. Annually, we raise funds to support
education grants to local schools.
SPRING AND
CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS: Birders participate in two international bird counts,
one in the spring and another during the week between Christmas and New
Year's Day by taking a census of birds in Vanderburgh and Posey
Counties. We also participate in various other counts throughout the
year, including the
Great Backyard Bird Count
in February.
EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMS: Annually, we fund
environmental grants with area schools. We were also sponsors of the North
Woods nature trail, and EAS volunteers wrote the signage for the trail
system and developed GPS computer-generated trail maps.
AUDUBON MAGAZINE: Besides
the satisfaction of supporting our conservation services and activities, a
very tangible (and immensely enjoyable) benefit awaits you in the colorful
pages of the world-acclaimed quarterly magazine Audubon. The voice
of the National Audubon Society, a byword for conservation, Audubon
has been speaking out on issues vital to nature for almost a
century.
